The "Ben McCool" is towing (actually pushing, but it's called towing in the United States) two empty tank barges, each about 295 feet long and 54 feet wide. The width was not chosen arbitrarily; two of these barges can fit side by side in the locks of the Mississippi River system, which are 110 feet wide.

The starboard barge is "HBL 3008", owned by Houston Barge Line. This type of tank barge is used to transport thick liquids such as asphalt. The cargo tanks are under the deck, but on deck one can see pipes for loading and unloading the cargo, diesel-powered pumps, and heaters (with rusty cylindrical exhaust pipes) which keep the cargo warm enough to be pumped out (around 300 degrees F for asphalt).
