The Transatlantic Trophy was an annual motorcycling racing match between the United Kingdom and the United States, held over the Easter weekend at British racing tracks. The series ran between 1971 and 1991, with a Silver Anniversary Transatlantic Challenge run in 1996.

The inaugural races in 1971 used only BSA/Triumph 750cc triples, but in subsequent years machines were from other manufacturers as well. Initially the machines were to F750 specification, but later 500 GP World, US and UK Superbike racing specification bikes competed. The riders in the Silver Anniversary matches all used modified 900cc Triumph Speed Triples.

Originally called the Anglo-American Match Races, the series was variously called Transatlantic Trophy, Transatlantic Challenge, Eurolantic Challenge and Transatlantic Superbike Challenge.

Doug Sehl crashed in the 2nd race at Brands Hatch and broke his collarbone. Reserve Gary Fisher took his place for the rest of the races using Doug Sehl’s Harley-Davidson and a helmet borrowed from Barry Sheene.[10]

Cal Rayborn raced with a broken shoulder following a crash at Imola.[11]

Dave Croxford debuted the new Dave Croxford with an engine designed by Cosworth. (The engine was effectively 2 cylinders from the highly successful V8 Cosworth DFV Formula One engine. After the under-developed bike failed to perform well at Brands Hatch it was withdrawn from The Mallory and Oulton Park rounds.[18]

1977 John Player Transatlantic Trophy[edit]

The teams are composed of 8 pilots.

The US team originally consisted of Dave Aldana, Steve Baker, Randy Cleek, Pat Evans, Pat Hennen, Ron Pierce, Kenny Roberts and Gary Scott, with Dave Emde in reserve. After a dispute with his sponsor, Ron Pierce withdrew from the team. Dave Emde was promoted to the team and Skip Aksland become reserve.[2] Pat Evans was killed during the Imola 200[20] that was held the weekend before the Transatlantic Trophy. Randy Cleek died in an automobile accident returning from Imola. Ron Pierce rejoined the team, Skip Aksland become a full member of the team and Kevin Stafford become reserve.[2]

Suzuki brought an overbored version of its 500cc GP winning bike the XR14. Barry Sheene, Steve Parrish and Pat Hennen were riding the 652cc XR23. The bike was extremely powerful but the chassis and tyres couldn't handle the power. Even with the engine de-tuned to give 135 bhp the bike was difficult to ride. Pat Hennen managed to master the bike and was the series top scorer.[21]

The US beat UK by 405 points to 380.[4]

Kenny Roberts was not available to join the US team due to testing duties for Yamaha. Honda America wouldn't supply Freddie Spencer with his usual mount, so he raced on a Suzuki RG500 borrowed from Bel-Ray and Wes Cooley couldn't use his Yoshimura Suzuki and rode on a borrowed Yamaha 750.[28]

UK Team member Steve Parrish broke his wrist 6 days before the first race of the series so Steve Henshaw was drafted into the team as a replacement.[28]

The US team lacked some of its strongest members, Kenny Roberts had testing commitments for Yamaha in the run-up to the Austrian GP, and Randy Mamola was testing for Suzuki. There were insufficient spares available for Eddie Lawson's Kawasaki KR500 to allow him to compete. To add to the problems for the US, Freddie Spencer crashed in the first race and without sufficient spares to repair his Honda NS500, he took no further part in the challenge. Mechanical problems meant the US could only field six bikes in the final race at Outon Park.[31]

1983 Marlboro Transatlantic Trophy[edit]

The teams are composed of 6 drivers. Change in the circuits, Mallory Park is abandoned and the races will take place at Oulton Park, Snetterton and Brands Hatch.

Honda declined to release 500 GP points leader, Freddie Spencer, for the series. The cost of shipping Dave Aldana's Yamaha TZ750 Yamaha to the UK, along with his mechanic, was too high so he rode on a rented ex-works Suzuki 500. In order to preserve their GP bikes, Kenny Roberts and Eddie Lawson rode the Yamaha 680cc OW69, which was designed for the high speed banking at Daytona rather than the tight English short circuits. Mike Baldwin crashed out during the 1st race and took no further part in the series due to the injuries he sustained. There were no reserves for the teams, so the US team was a man short.[34]

The UK beat the USA by 245 points to 198.[34]

American Bubba Shobert crashed in practice breaking his wrist and took not further part in the challenge.[40]

The opening race saw a fairing banging, side by side battle for the lead between newcomer Wayne Rainey & 1986 top scorer Kevin Schwantz, which was eventually won by Schwantz. The race has been described as one of the ten greatest races ever.[41]

1991 Transatlantic Superbike Challenge[edit]

There were two Canadian in the US team, Jacques Guenette[49] and Miguel Duhamel,[50] son of 1973/4 Transatlantic competitor Yvon Duhamel.[51]

Tim Bourne was to be in the UK team but injured himself a week before the Trophy races. Reserve, Mark Liscott, moved into the team. Robert Holden crashed in practice and suffered a crushed vertebrae so took no further part. Spaniard Luis Carlos Maurel, an honorary American team member failed to show up.[50]

1996 Silver Anniversary Transatlantic Challenge[edit]

The Silver Anniversary Transatlantic Challenge (also known as the General Guarantee Triumph Trans-Atlantic Challenge) was run at Donnington Park on May 26-27 1996, all riders competed on modified 900cc Triumph Speed Triples. Two teams of 13 from the US and UK completed agains each other in 3 rounds of 12 laps on Bank Holiday Monday, May 27. The grid for the first race was determined by qualifying that had taken place that morning, the grid positions being alternated between US and UK riders dependent on their qualifying times. The previous day, Sunday had been used for practice.[56] US team member Dave Aldana had also competed in the first Transatlantic Challenge in 1971.[2] UK tem member Michael Rutter is the son of 1972 Transatlantic competitor Tony Rutter.[57]

The UK team beat the US by 614 points to 426.[56]
