The Sword in the Stone is an upcoming American film, based on the 1963 animated film of the same name which was written by Bill Peet. The film is set to debut on the streaming service Disney+. It will be directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo from a screenplay written by Bryan Cogman.


The Sword in the Stone takes a "lighthearded view" of the legend of King Arthur Pendragon, focusing on young Arthur at a time in which he was mentored by the wizard Merlin.[1]



In July of 2015, it was announced that Walt Disney Pictures was developing a live-action adaptation of the 1963 animated film, The Sword in the Stone. The screenplay was written by Bryan Cogman, with Brigham Taylor serving as producer.[2]

By January 2018, it was announced that the film would be directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.[1] In February, it was announced that the film will premiere exclusively on Disney+.[3] Enrique Chediak and Eugenio Caballero joined the production as cinematographer, and production designer, respectively[4][5]


Principal photography was scheduled to commence on September 24, 2018 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.[6]
