Production[edit]

Development[edit]

In February 2018, the film (a action comedy from Dwayne Johnson and writer and director Rawson Marshall Thurber) was developed as part of a bidding war consisting of major studios fighting for the rights. Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Legendary Entertainment, 20th Century Fox, Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment were all considered. The $125-150 million film would be produced by Beau Flynn through his Flynn Picture Company, with Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions banner along with Thurber's Bad Version Inc. with Wendy Jacobson executive producing.[3] On February 9, 2018, it was announced that Universal and Legendary won the bidding war in order to land the rights. Johnson was confirmed to be paid at least $20 million for the first time for this film.[4]

Casting[edit]

Gal Gadot was confirmed to join Johnson in June 2018.[5] Ryan Reynolds was added in July 2019.[6]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography on the film was expected to start in April 2019 after Johnson wrapped production on Jumanji: The Next Level.[7] In July 2019, filming was delayed to begin in early 2020.[8]

Release[edit]

Universal originally set the film for a June 12, 2020 release date.[9] The date got moved 5 months to November 13, 2020.[10] The project was then moved to Netflix in July 2019, with no release date in place.[11]
