Prashanth Kumar Rai (born 4 April 1984) is an Indian professional Kabaddi player, who currently represents Haryana Steelers. He was born in Mangalore, Karnataka and debuted in the inaugural edition of VIVO Pro Kabaddi with Telugu Titans. He spent three seasons with the Titans before joining Dabang Delhi and Haryana Steelers in the next two editions. Prashanth was roped in by UP Yoddha[2] for Rs 79 lakh ahead of Pro Kabaddi’s sixth edition, but he returned to Haryana Steelers the following season.[1] His signature move is the running hand touch, where he tries to catch defenders off guard with a sudden burst of pace towards a defender while raiding.[3]

Early life[edit]

Prashanth hails from Mangalore in Karnataka and had barely played kabaddi until college. His sporting career began a few years prior as a weightlifter. However, after seeing his college seniors practice kabaddi, he decided to pursue a career in the sport. His kabaddi journey though wasn’t an easy one as he, unfortunately, lost both his parents over a short period of time[4]. It meant that just as he was starting to find his feet in kabaddi, Prashanth had to take the financial responsibility of running the household since he was the eldest of his siblings. Despite the difficult circumstances, Prashanth handled everything with a smile and worked for Vijaya Bank, while also playing for their kabaddi team as captain.[4]

Kabaddi Career:[edit]

Pro Kabaddi career

Season 1[edit]

Prashanth struggled for game-time during his first season with Telugu Titans. He only made seven appearances in the inaugural edition of the league and scored just 5 raid points.[3]

Season 2[edit]

The second season of VIVO Pro Kabaddi was much more fruitful for Prashanth. He scored 54 raid points at a raid strike rate of 50.94% and registered his first ever Super 10. In defence, Prashanth contributed 4 tackle points and even successfully executed a Super Tackle.[3]

Season 3[edit]

He failed to replicate his second season displays in Season 3 and ended the campaign with a disappointing 12 raid points from 13 matches for the Titans.[3]

Season 4[edit]

The fourth edition of VIVO Pro Kabaddi saw Prashanth join Dabang Delhi K.C., but once again he endured a difficult season and managed to score just 19 raid points from nine games.[3]

Season 5[edit]

The fifth season was a coming of age campaign for Prashanth, who scored a total of 80 points – the second-best among all Haryana Steelers players. He had a raid strike rate of 52.34% and his 78 raid points featured three Super Raids as well as three Super 10 performances. His three Super Raids was also the joint-most by a Haryana player along with Wazir Singh.[3]

Season 6[edit]

Season 6 witnessed Prashanth take his game to the next level with U.P. Yoddha. He scored a total of 147 points, including 144 raid points at a raid strike rate of 55.17%. This season also featured five Super 10 performances by Prashanth.[3]
