HelioHost is a US-based free web hosting provider. The company was founded by Ashoat Tevosyan in 2005 and is now headquartered in Seattle, Washington. The provider is a non-profit organization and is ran primarily by donations and volunteers.[1][2] The provider maintains three servers - "Johnny", "Ricky", and "Tommy".[3][4][5]

History[edit]

Ashoat Tevosyan, on March 2, 2005, had registered the heliohost.org domain and the service was launched. Originally, users had to use credits called "Helions" retrieved from activity on HelioNet or from placing ads on their website in order to use to host their website. This practice was unpopular among users and was removed in favor of donations.[5][6]

On December 4, 2010, HelioHost ceased monitoring bandwidth due to unpopularity among users.[7]

On June 26, 2015, HelioNet had reached 100,000 users.

Starting on June 28, 2016, both the Charlie and the Stevie servers crashed forcing users to download a copy of their data.[8] This had caused hosted sites to be offline for several months.

In August 2019, the Tommy server crashed forcing users to download a copy of their data.

Features and Restrictions[edit]

Features of HelioHost Servers[9]
.php .aspx .jsp .war RoR MySQL PostgreSQL Sqlite Django Python Perl Ruby Cron FTP Email
Tommy X X X X X X X X X X X X X X
Johnny X X X X X X X X X X X X X X
Ricky X X X X X X X X X X

Each user has:

  • Access to cPanel and FTP
  • A maximum of 1000 MB storage
  • A maximum of 1 subdomain HelioHost site (*.heliohost.org)
  • Unlimited email addresses
  • Unlimited parked and sub domains
  • Unlimited bandwidth (although overuse could result in account suspension).[10][11][12]

Users are required to access their cPanel once every 30 days or their account will be suspended for inactivity. The free provider has also been criticized for frequent server downtime and crashing. Multiple server crashes such as the Charlie server crash of 2016 and the Tommy server crash in 2019, had caused hosted sites to go offline. It had also forced users to download a copy of their website and when the server came back online, reconfigure the site and reupload the backups. This had caused negative reviews and made many users to question the reliability of the servers.[13][14]
