Freedom Village[1][2] is an international residential ministry and intensive care boarding home for at-risk youth that is operated from the perspective of Christian fundamentalism.[3][4][5] It primarily provides care for disturbed and emotionally challenged minors. [6]

It has three separate locations: United States, Canada and Ukraine.[7]

The United States location, often referred to as Freedom Village USA, operates under the name of Gates Community Chapel of Rochester, Inc.[8] It features two programs:

  • Freedom Academy, a residential program for teenagers (ages 13-21 years of age)[9]
  • Freedom Ranch, a residential program for men over 21[10]

The organization has undergone a great deal of controversy with accusations of negligence, psychological abuse, and mistreatment.[11][12][13][14] It has also been subjected to numerous financial troubles.

History[edit]

Starting with the U.S. branch, Freedom Village was founded in 1981 in Starkey, Yates County, by the Rev. Fletcher Brothers, a fundamentalist Christian minister from Rochester.

The Canadian branch was established in 1984.[15]

Structure[edit]

Students are accepted year round with an average cost of $4,700 a month, per student. Rules include conservative dress for men and women and limited contact with the outside world.[16]

Controversy[edit]

The organization has been a subject of much controversy and legal issues.[17][18][19][20][21]

Buffalo lawyer Susan Gray, who filed a lawsuit on behalf of Patricia Brown, said she has talked with several former residents of the residential religious school who have said they were threatened and coerced by Brothers and staff members whenever they expressed a desire to leave Freedom Village and return to their homes.

Many reviews written by former employees who had worked at the U.S. location noted the poor management.[22][23]

Brothers has also been accused since the 1980s of misusing millions of dollars raised for Freedom Village.[24]

Cult accusations[edit]

Freedom Village has been accused of resembling a cult by many of its former members and their families.[25][26] Some ex-members said in interviews that they were convinced that if they left Freedom Village, they’d be "defying God’s will".[27]
