Don Madge is a South African professional mixed martial arts (MMA) competitor presently competing in the lightweight (MMA) division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He previously competed in the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) in South Africa.

Background[edit]

Madge was born in Cape Town on November 11, 1990.[1]. He started Karate at the age of 6 and took up Muay Thai at the age of 14. He competed in Thailand as a professional Muay Thai fighter amassing over 70 professional fights[2]. In 2011 he returned to South Africa to pursue a career in MMA.

Mixed martial arts career[edit]

Extreme Fighting Championship[edit]

Madge made his professional MMA debut on November 10, 2011 in the Extreme Fighting Championship at EFC 11 [3] in Johannesburg. He won via TKO (knees) in the first round.

In his fourth professional EFC fight, Madge won the Lightweight title on June 27, 2013 at EFC 20, submitting Costa Ioannou with a rear-naked choke in the fifth round [4] becoming, at 22 years old, the youngest EFC champion at that time.[5] He lost the title to Leon Mynhardt at EFC 25 on November 7, 2013 to a split decision after five rounds.[6].

In his eleventh professional EFC fight, Madge regained the EFC lightweight title on April 8, 2017 at EFC 58 by submitting Dave Mazany from the USA with a rear-naked choke in the second round.[7][8].

Following his victory at EFC 58, Madge was invited to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Ultimate Fighting Championship[edit]

Madge made his UFC debut against Te Edwards at UFC Fight Night 138 - Oezdemir vs. Smith on October 27, 2018 [9] in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. He knocked Edwards out with a head kick fifteen seconds into the second round[10]. His performance earned him a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus. [11]

Madge next faced Fares Ziam[12] on September 7, 2019 at UFC 242 - Khabib vs Poirier in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He won the fight by unanimous decision.[13]
