City Challenge Race is a not-for-profit company that hosts different events throughout the East Coast for all levels of fitness. They focus on family-and-friends fun while also pushing physical and mental limits.[1]. Their events range from urban obstacle courses[2] and 5K races to fun runs and youth races. [3]

History[edit]

In 2013, City Challange Race began as a means to fundraise for Guzman's sister who was diagnosed with breast cancer.[4] The following year City Challenge Race grew to 3 events. As of 2019, they have grown to 23 races held throughout the Northeast region/ East Coast (mainly popular in the NJ Hudson County area [5][6]). In 2015, City Challenge began their Youth City Challenge Races. In 2018, City Challenge Race was included as a partner in the first North American OCR Championship [7]. In 2019, they added the Exchange Place Corporate Challenge, the Fleet Week 5K, and the Stamford City Race to their list of events.

Founder and CEO[edit]

City Challenge Race was founded by Elvi Guzman. Elvi Guzman was raised in Central New Jersey with 6 siblings. He credits his entrepreneurship drive to both his parents. While growing up he witnessed his parents, Gladys and Felix, work various jobs while running small businesses. He went to college at Florida International University and thereafter worked and managed hotels including the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne & Battery Park, NYC. At an early age, he knew he would own a business and did so in April 2013 when he created The City Challenge Obstacle Race. Since starting the business in 2013 he has grown the company from 1 event (Hoboken City Challenge Race) in 2013 to 23 scheduled events in 2019. His vision to produce health & fitness events while raising funds for charity was inspired by an event in 2012 when his sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2013 the inaugural Hoboken City Challenge Race partnered with Susan G Komen of North Jersey to raise funds for breast cancer survivors. Since 2013 City Challenge Race events’ have combined raised over $1,000,798 for various local and national charities.
